This offshoot of the Chegoggin settlement began in the 1770's. It is approximately 1 mile south-west of Chegoggin Lake near Yarmouth on the southern end of Nova Scotia. The origin of the community's name is still unclear. The Indians probably called it "Kespoowit", "Land's End". Perhaps Sanford got its name from the fact that there was a sandy ford over a stream nearby. Job Pease, one of the grantees & sellers of Yarmouth was related to the Sandford family by marriage.
