Sandford

This offshoot of the Chegoggin settlement began in the 1770's. It is approximately 1 mile south-west of Chegoggin Lake near Yarmouth on the southern end of Nova Scotia. The origin of the community's name is still unclear. The Indians probably called it "Kespoowit", "Land's End". Perhaps Sanford got its name from the fact that there was a sandy ford over a stream nearby. Job Pease, one of the grantees & sellers of Yarmouth was related to the Sandford family by marriage.

Sanford Wharf is noted for having one of the smallest drawbridges in the world as part of its structure. The existence of this drawbridge allows the boats to move in to snug harbour, but allows the fishermen easy access from one side to the other.
